Automotive & Metal Industry

An industrial client, located in Brazil, which produces parts for automotive industry. The company used to use a traditional physical-chemical WWTP wastewater treatment process, which was based on standard coagulation-flocculation. Yet, this system could not solve efficiently oil removal and metal precipitation issues. Additionally, it presented high operational costs and low efficiency levels. In order to solve such problems, VentilAQUA proposed the use of an AOP electrocoagulation and electro-oxidation which were easily added to company’s existing plant. All in all, our intervention allowed this Brazilian company to reduce costs, increase compliance, reuse water, and decrease sludge.

Milk & Dairy

One of the major dairy Portuguese companies entrusted to VentilAQUA the development of a complete solution for their waste water treatment. Keeping in mind the best systems to treat waters coming from milk, butter, and cream processing, VentilAQUA suggested the use of a batch biological oxidation process or a SBR process (sequence batch reactor), which in this case ended up using three SBR reactors, all under VentilAQUA’s SmartSBR system, to treat together about 600m3 daily. At the end of the day, this technology allows our client to partially recover water that may be reused in irrigation and current washing activities. Waters from the cheese production site are pre-treated on a DAF system, prior to the common biological oxidation step. The sludge produced on the oxidation process is dehydrated by a centrifuge unit.

Shopping malls & Industrial Kitchens

A major south American shopping mall, with dozens of restaurants in the food court and thousands of daily meals to prepare and serve, was facing the more and more compliance problems with local authorities, regarding COD and O&G limits. Moreover, bad odors coming from grease traps in parking lot were also a problem gaining weight. Helping to solve this problem, VentilAQUA suggested the use of a compact solution based on electrocoagulation and a VAMEF unit, which came to let our client treat and reuse water, eliminating trucking out greases, bad odors and tough logistics, bringing the mall to a new and improved environmental reality. On top of that, no major civil work was required.

Fruit and Vegetables

One of the major international top players on the fruit concentrate business opted for VentilAQUA to develop its wastewater treatment solution for its many several industrial facilities. For one of the plants that this company owes in Portugal, which generates 200 m3 wastewater per day, VentilAQUA developed a solution based on the combination of an MBBR process, as a primary load reduction stage, with a secondary biological unit under plug flow activated sludge process. The combination of these two technologies allowed for the maximization of the wastewater treatment efficiency, letting our client finally be able to efficiently deal with the load fluctuation, while also granting the compliance legal requirements.

Cosmetic and Detergents

One of the biggest Portuguese detergent and cleaning products producer was trying to find the best solution to deal with the treatment of its complex wastewater. The huge amount of product references was reflected into the variability and complexity of the wastewater. To solve such issue, VentilAQUA’s implemented on the plant, the VABEC technology working under an electrocoagulation process, with a flow capacity of 4 m3/h. This solution allowed our client to solve the huge limitations that the previous and old tradition existing chemical solution presented.

Ceramic and Glass

A large international glass bottle producer, which unfortunately was suffering from problems with dirty water recycling and sludge accumulation in mold washing areas. To solve such issues, VentilAQUA introduced VAMEF technology in a BA Glass 15 m3/h side-stream operation. This solution allowed total re-circulation treatment, retaining all greases and oils, as well as suspended solids, generating a clean water recycling process.

Car Wash

Our client is a car and truck wash business, and the largest Portuguese company for new cars preparation and shipping to dealers. This company was particularly committed to improve its environmental balance and financial efficiency in what regards water consumption. Therefore, two plants were installed at this site. One is dedicated to cleaning the new cars, whose waste waters contain waxes, detergent and other contamination. For such task, the plant relies on a DAF VAMEF process. The second plant, on the other hand, is dedicated to cleaning trucks for transportation of new cars. This second plant uses a VAMEC unit, since it is less demanding from an operational point of view. All in all, these two plants of 2 m3/h capacity each, are responsible for the huge reduction of our client’s financial resources allocated to water management.

Textile dyeing & Denim wash

The world leader in zipper manufacturing was facing compliance problems with surfactants rejection levels, associated with very stringent COD rejection limits. In order to solve such problem, VentilAQUA introduced a VABEC electrocoagulation process associated with a VAMEF DAF system. These two technologies combined allowed for total removal of color, surfactants and, consequently, COD and BOD. At the end of the day, clean and clear water comes out of our client’s plants, at a flow rate of 6 m3/h. Also, the company at stake now presents lower operating costs and decreased sludge production. Efficiency that outperforms by a lot a standard chemical process.

Painting Operations

The shoe manufacturing industry has been evolving for years, and these days, the market trends require new production processes. In fact, shoe painting became a common technique of modern industries. For the biggest Portuguese shoe manufacturer, VentilAQUA developed a solution based on its compact VAMEC plants. This solution allowed not only to treat the water coming from the painting booth, but also to reuse the treated water for the same industrial process. All in all, VAMEC allowed to reduce water consumption and contributed to a certain circular economy.

Wineries

The winery sector has been increasing significantly in the past few years in the Portuguese market. Not only in terms of production volume, but also in quality and level of demand, where it’s also included the environmental compliance. That was the case of VentilAQUA’s client, as its old plant was no longer suitable for the capacity and compliance demand they were facing. With a daily wastewater volume of 200 m3/day during harvesting season, we developed from scratch a new wastewater treatment plant, under SBR technology, using our SmartSBR© technology, which is a PLC-based control and monitoring program that gives additional tools for the automatic adjustment of the system working conditions, adapting the plant to the requirement variations along the year, in a simple and friendly way.

Plastic Industries

With the aim of increasing its efficiency and competitiveness on the very demanding plastic injection sector, one of the biggest Portuguese players on the sector, gave a vote of confidence to VentilAQUA when we presented all the potential and efficiency of the FRIESS EFC system. The solution allowed for great boosts on efficiency along with a huge decrease of the operational costs. Given the results of FRIESS EFC in the first plant, the company at stake extended the strategy to other production sites, strengthening the group’s position as a leader in the sector.

Serigraphic and Printing

The textile serigraphic printing industry is very common all over the world, especially in countries with strong textile and clothing industry, like in Portugal, where in the north region many small to medium companies develop their businesses. This is one of the many VentilAQUA clients on the sector, where a standard VAMEC unit solves the problem of the daily wastewater coming from frames cleaning operations. At a maximum rate of 1 m3/h, the installed VAMEC units system treats the water, so that it is discharged into the sewer network, or preferably recovered again into the cleaning process. It’s an easy operating and fully automatic system that gives the client tranquility in the process and time to focus on its operation.

Cork

A leading industrial company, with global activity, producing corks and other cork products, with 2 plants in Portugal, each one with different specs. The largest one, focus its work in preparing cork from natural non treated cork, with cooking and bleaching. For this plant, a combined chemical treatment with Fenton process on a VAMEC unit and a complementary biological treatment with SmartSBR process was designed, allowing for full compliance and rejection in natural environment. A flowrate of 2 m3/h and initial loads of recalcitrant 2000 mg/l of COD converts into a treated effluent with less than 125 ppm of COD, no solids, controlled pH, less than 40 ppm of BOD.

Domestic & Hotel

Our client is an important international luxury hotel chain, with a special high luxury unit located in Morocco, that requested VentilAQUA a special treatment plant to treat all effluents from hotel activity (laundry, kitchen, pools, toilets) and convert these waters into usable ones for irrigation of the dense gardens, in an area known by its dryness. Yet, irrigating vast gardens used by guests, requires special care to avoid any contamination, but also avoid using strong oxidative/disinfection chemicals that can ruin the grass.

Thus, VentilAQUA offered a solution based on a SBR process, together with our SmartSBR control device, with a capacity of 70 m3/day operation, completed with a tertiary treatment based on a STERI+O3 unit running with ozone. All effluents, mixed in an initial balance tank are treated biologically and disinfected before being accumulated into a treated water tank for reuse. All of this in a very discreet layout, fully underground, integrated into the hotel architecture, allowing for easy operation and nearly invisible existence.

Wood & furniture

Our client is a well known wood furniture manufacturer, producing modern and classical furniture, with several painting cabins in its facilities. A VAMEC unit with special chemical treatment for coagulation/flocculation allows the company to totally remove COD and BOD, as well as solids and color, on a daily basis, creating conditions for a full water reuse. The amount of water lost in the sludge and evaporation, less than 10% in volume, requires a daily makeup of these 10%, ensuring a daily renewable and keeping the waters safe from saturation. Payback period for VAMEC units is quite fast, less than 2 years, when compared with dirty water accumulation and trucking out, methods widely used in the past.
